Eight people have become trapped in mine blaze in northern Sweden Thursday, according to Swedish news agency TT.

     The mine in Malmberg became blazed after a vehicle caught fire about one kilometer below ground level at 4 pm Thursday. At 8 pm the group was still awaiting assistance in a rescue chamber 1,250 meters below the surface, TT quoted spokesperson Kajsa Lindmark for mining company LKAB as saying. 

     The spokeperson added that there were about 50 people in the mine when the fire broke out, most of whom had managed to leave the mine. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle was able to leave the scene of the accident unharmed and return to safety.

     "Rescue services are in place and are trying to put out the fire," said Lindmark,  adding that "the eight people stuck in the rescue chamber has been in contact with us and are waiting for the smoke to abate. But we have no reports of any injuries."
