China's new standards on drinking natural mineral water will be published, setting limited level of bromate at 0.01mg/L, according to sources with the General Administration of Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ).

The draft standards have been put on the website of GAQSIQ to solicit public opinions.

China had seldom used ozone in sterilization of water. So there has been no restriction for the limit level of bromate in the present standards of drinking mineral water.

But nowadays mineral water enterprises have more and more adopted the ozone sterilization in production, bringing about the issue of bromate, which is said to possibly cause cancer of human through test of animals.

After repeated studies and taking reference of such standards drafted by other countries and international organizations, the revised standards on drinking mineral water will set limited level of bromate at 0.01mg/L.
