World aluminium production reaches new high in August - IAI

Global daily production of primary aluminium rose to 104,200 tonnes in August, according to statistics published by the International Aluminium Institute, its highest level since the IAI began compiling data in 1973.


Production is up 1,600 tonnes per day from July, and by over 14 pct from August last year.


Overall aluminium production in August rose to 3.23 mln tonnes against a revised 3.18 mln tonnes in July, it added.


China, the world's biggest producer of the metal, upped its overall aluminium production in August to 1.111 mln tonnes from 1.073 mln tonnes the previous month.


In the first eight months of 2007, global daily average production of primary aluminium rose by 12.5 pct to 100,600 tonnes against 89,500 tonnes in the same period of 2006, the IAI added.


Overall production in the period rose to 24.4 mln tonnes from 21.7 mln in 2006.
