World output of crude steel in September 2007

World crude steel production for the 67 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute was 110.1 million metric tons (mmt) in September. This is a 6.2% increase on September 2006.


In the first three quarters of 2007, crude steel production in Asia exceeded half-a-billion tonnes. Asian crude steel production was 540.8 mmt in the first nine months of 2007. This is an increase of 11.7% compared to the same period last year.


Chinese production was 41.5 mmt in September, an increase of 14.8% on September 2006. India produced 4.3 mmt, an increase of 6.9%.


In Europe, the 27 EU nations produced 17.5 mmt of crude steel, 1.5% higher than for the same month last year. Germany, the largest crude steel producer in the EU-27, had a crude steel production of 4.1 mmt, 1.0% higher than for the same month last year.


Brazil produced 2.9 mmt of crude steel, an increase of 4.0% on September 2007.


Production in Ukraine was 3.5 mmt, an increase of 4.7% compared to the same month last year.
